The communities of Tijeras, Cedar Crest and Sandia Park, along with the South 14 area, and Edgewood together make up what is known as the "East Mountain Area" outside of Albuquerque. Homes in the area range from aged, rustic mountain cabins to elegant executive residences in new, planned developments. Lot sizes vary from an acre to ten or more acres, yet most are within half an hour commute to the Albuquerque airport. Land ranges from steeply sloped areas thick with Ponderosa pines through areas covered in pinon and juniper, to nearly flat meadow. All can often be snow-covered in winter.

History in The East Mountain area outside of Albuquerque dates back to one of the the first known human habitations in the New World, the "Sandia Man Cave" on the slopes of the Sandia Mountains, just below what is a skiers delight, Sandia Crest Ski Area!
